Louisiana is an industrial superpower as a major producer of oil, gas and petrochemicals. The environmental justice communities along the Mississippi River are often remnants of communities founded by formerly enslaved people who settled at the edges of the plantations where they once labored. These plantations have evolved from agriculture to oil refining, plastics production or any number of heavy industrial uses. Residents living adjacent to these changing land-uses can find themselves living subject to inappropriate impacts and risks.
New Legacy Foundation was created in response to requests from the community in St. James Parish. St James, LA consists of several small residential communities inappropriately surrounded by industrial development. Residents have been engaged throughout the development of the Foundation informing the process and even choosing the name, New Legacy.
